Through groundbreaking research, as well as symposia and conferences, the Lowell Milken Institute also will facilitate the kind of sustained dialogue with policymakers and practitioners that is UCLA's hallmark as a public university."  - UCLA Chancellor Gene Block

Law School Gains Expanded Program and Resources

The Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy, established in 2011 with a gift from UCLA School of Law Alumnus Lowell Milken, will serve students, faculty and the greater community at the highest levels of scholarship and real-world experience. By supporting core academic programs, promoting innovative new initiatives and providing financial support for students, the Lowell Milken Institute will advance UCLA School of Law’s strength in research and teaching, as well as facilitate sustained dialogue with policymakers and practitioners that will leave a lasting impact on the larger legal and business communities.

UCLA Law dean Rachel F. Moran noted that the Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy will draw on the school's existing strengths in business law and policy, including its premier faculty and outstanding students, as well as its long tradition of interdisciplinary collaborations.

"This gift brings the dynamic and visionary nature of Lowell Milken's philanthropic initiatives to a world-class academic and legal setting and reinforces UCLA Law's longstanding traditions of excellence, innovation, access and service," Moran said. "Lowell's generosity will enable us to initiate a many curricular innovations, further critical research and provide financial support for students, who will become our nation's future leaders in business law and policy.

The Institute and its Legacy

"I am deeply grateful to Lowell for his commitment to UCLA Law and for his investment in the future of our law school and our community. We hope this extraordinary act of philanthropy will inspire others to dedicate resources to this core area in scholarship and teaching." –UCLA School of Law Dean Rachel F. Moran

“I am pleased to lend my support to Dean Moran’s vision and the establishment of the Lowell Milken Institute for Business Law and Policy as a means to further develop the skills, knowledge and experiences of UCLA law students, to provide greater reach for UCLA’s research and projects, outstanding faculty and efforts to attract and retain world-class faculty members,” Lowell Milken said.  As 2009 law school alumnus of the year at UCLA Milken has been an active member of the alumni community for many years.

“At a time when our state’s great universities are under significant financial pressure and constraints, it is incumbent upon those of us who benefited greatly from our educational experiences within the UC system to help support the outstanding work of these universities.”

With this gift to UCLA Milken has enabled the school to meet the ambitious $100 million fundraising goal set for the Campaign for UCLA School of Law, which was launched in 2008, well ahead of its original five-year schedule.
