2011 Lowell Milken Center Fellows
The Lowell Milken Center Fellowship is awarded on the basis of merit to those teachers who have distinguished themselves in the field of education. The Center selects the best teachers in America to collaborate with on projects that celebrate unsung heroes in history.
The Lowell Milken Center of Fort Scott, Kansas has awarded the prestigious Lowell Milken Center Fellowship to Richard Meserve of Falmouth, Maine and Anna Hull of Panama City Beach, Florida.
Richard Meserve teaches multiple secondary subjects at the REAL School in Falmouth, Maine. The unifying link in all of his classes, regardless of the subject, is the population of at-risk students, those who need a very special kind of teacher to inspire and motivate them. Meserve has done just this; he has improved attendance, academic performance, and credit-standing for nearly all of his students. His expertise in alternative education, as well as an unwavering dedication to his students is present in every class he teaches. Meserve's students have responded positively to his teaching style, which consists of working in small groups, differentiated instruction, and real-world learning.
Students in Anna Hull’s fourth and fifth grade gifted class at Patronis Elementary School in Panama City Beach, FL travel the world without ever leaving the classroom. From connecting with former teachers who have moved across the country to communicating with U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq, Hull engages her students in ways that make learning relevant. Her recent short-term teaching assignment in Tanzania was yet another virtual journey for the entire classroom.  Juxtaposing time-tested techniques with 21st-century tools like video conferences and Promethean boards, she strikes a winning balance between the traditional and the innovative. Encouraging her kids to be team players who also are self-reliant, Hull incorporates shared workspaces, collaborative activities and inquiry-based instruction in which students actively participate in their learning.
